Tulip Tree

An original design
by Pat Campbell

This class project will be a small tree with a tulip, leaves and berries. You'll work on an original design suitable for use as a pillow top or small wallhanging. Hand appliqué techniques are taught with individual critique to fine tune sharp points, smooth curves and round circles. Several methods of making bias stems will be demonstrated as well as new options in template making. Color, technique and relaxation will be emphasized so that the stitcher will perfect his or her skill, experience minimum frustration, and enjoy appliqué.

Provided for you: template ready pattern, appliqué pins, needles, and thread

You need to bring: thimble, pin cushion, sandpaper board*, scissors (embroidery-type and paper cutting), white marking pencil, mechanical lead pencil, fat quarter for background fabric.
Fabrics: A colorful assortment of fabrics; e.g., two-color prints (tone on tone), large tropicals, hand-dyes or hand painted fabrics. A wonderful brown for a tree trunk and stems, lush greens for leaves and an exciting array of colors for flowers and berries.

*For those who don't know, a sandpaper board is simply a small piece of fine sandpaper adhered to a piece of plywood, foamcore, old clip board or manila folder. Its purpose is to keep your fabric from moving while tracing templates.
